Who is Matthew Sookdeo?

Since 2013, I have worked alongside world-renowned musculoskeletal experts in clinical settings, everyday gyms, and high performance facilities. This experience has given me an in-depth understanding of human health and well-being, enabling me to help people from all walks of life. 

 
 

Be it a banker, a homemaker, or a mixed martial artists I have helped them all achieve their fitness and wellness goals. There are fundamentals in training that no matter your fitness level, you need to be doing. For example, I always prescribe a pivot joint exercise for the neck that significantly reduces tightness, stiffness, and improves the function of the neck. My extensive understanding of human physiology, biomechanics, approach to fitness, and continued support from clients as well as colleagues has led me to create this website.

My goal is to help you achieve your desired outcomes in the safest and most effective manner! The programs I offer are designed with your goals and needs in mind. Through this tailored approach, I will show you how to improve your performance at the gym, recovery and mental health, while reducing pain and the likelihood of (re)injury. I am strongly convinced that with my approach will see your overall well-being improve.

Even if you are not currently suffering from injury, your body requires specific physical inputs to ensure it continues to function pain and problem-free. The joint specific practices I have created will ensure that you continue to do so.

My Personal Journey

Let’s start from the beginning. At the age of 6 my mom enrolled me in taekwondo and karate classes because I was a hyperactive kid. I continued with that up until the age of 13, at which point I stopped training all together (no other reason than I became a know it all teenager). Fast forward five years and a close friend of mine who practiced various martial arts convinced me to come join his Muay Thai club.

After the first class I was so sore that I couldn’t return for 12 days. After the second class it took me another 12 days to return. The third time I went it wasn’t for a class but rather for a sparring session with my friend. Little did I know this would be the ‘spark’ that began my journey into health and wellness… Long story short I got my ass kicked. As I was laying in the ring trying to bring myself together I asked myself a question ‘what do I have to do to make sure this never happens again?’ That led me to a life free of alcohol, a bedtime of no later than 10pm, changing my diet, practicing other forms of training including yoga, planting a garden that summer to grow as much organic fruits and vegetables as I could, meditating everyday, and showing up to that Muay Thai club as much as I could. After a year of doing that I was far better than when I started, so much better that many people at the club said if they didn’t know me they would have thought I had been practicing for much longer than a year.

I felt like a new person, I had more energy, more confidence, greater mental clarity, I looked better, and I decided that I wanted to show others what improving your body and mind can do for you. At that point I asked myself another question ‘what is the best way to help others?’ The answer at that time was to go to school. I thought that would allow me to learn from experts and provide people with the best care possible. I looked into various programs and asked various people I knew in the field and the best answer seemed to be to enroll in a Fitness and Lifestyle Management program so that’s what I did. Two years later I graduated from that program and received an Advance Diploma in Fitness and Lifestyle Management. That allowed me to take the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology Certified Personal Trainer course which I also completed. Sounds fancy right? You would think someone with those certifications knows a lot about human health. Well let me tell you right now that is far from true! Those certifications are not worth the paper they’re printed on. What I did gain from that experience is the realization that the majority of professionals in this field have scary misunderstandings of fundamental principles that connect science and fitness. Not respecting these principles leads to plateaus, pain, injury and the deterioration of longevity and vitality of human health. Knowing this I decided to break away from the norm and seek the advice of a real expert.

That expert to me was a world renowned musculoskeletal expert named Dr. Andreo Spina so I decided to reach out to him and see if he would help me. Thankfully, Dr. Spina decided to put me under his wing and helped me transform my life, overcome all my injuries, and helped me truly understand what is required to optimize human health. 

For more than 7 years my knowledge and skills were sharpened under the tutelage of Dr. Spina. Over that time I also met, trained, and worked with high level performance coaches to round out my skill set. Today, I continue to learn from Dr. Spina and other experts but I have developed myself to a level that is required to help nearly anyone achieve their fitness goals, optimize their health, and become the best versions of themselves.
